Heads up folks, effective March 16, Rogers/Fido will be charging a new rate for text messaging. All sent/received non-premium text messages will now cost $20 as opposed to just $15. This rate change will apply to the following subscribers:
• Pay-per-use text messaging customers (who do not subscribe to any type of text add-on)
• Customers who DO NOT subscribe to an unlimited text messaging add-on
• Customers who send more texts than those included in their text add-on allotment
Rogers has started informing their (invoiced) postpaid subscribers of this price hike last Friday, January 14th, via a bill message. Those on prepaid, meanwhile, will be informed via SMS sometime this month.
Those already on a Rogers/Fido text plan, though, will still be able to receive SMS messages for free.
According to Mobilesyrup who got a chance to speak with Rogers spokesman Keith McArthur, the increase is due to the carriers’ investment “in new innovations such as text blocking and SMS monitoring that will help our customers manage costs and easily upgrade or move to a plan.” Not the best way to start the New Year, but sounds reasonable enough, and probably won’t affect the greater majority of their clientele since most are already on a text plan.
