Today’s Mobile News in Brief (July 5, 2011)

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Tuesday, July 5th 2011.

15 Million iPhone 5 Units Said To Be On Order For September Launch
Apple has reportedly placed an order for 15 million iPhone 5 units with Chinese electronic manufacturer Pegatron. Pegatron’s plants underwent a major expansion in 2010 and 2011 to accommodate Apple’s supply needs for the current iPhone 4 model, so the company had been seen as a likely candidate to receive orders for Apple’s next smartphone. Referring to the handset as both the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S, DigiTimes reports that shipments are scheduled to begin in September. The report also states that the upcoming iPhone refresh “does not seem to have any major update from iPhone 4.”

Leaked: Nokia 700 “Zeta” Press Photos
Nokia has had one hell of a time keeping details surrounding the Symbian-powered Nokia 700 (or “Zeta”) under wraps. First, the name and specs leaked last week; just a day later, real world photos found their way online. Today, another ingredient in the big ol’ leak sandwich slips into place: the press renders. Made for media to include with any articles or stories they write about the device, the press renders are generally held in secrecy until the instant the press releases go live and the device is officially official. So much for that.

Fido And Evergreen Create The “Share Your Care” Campaign, Gives $100,000 To The Environment
Fido has become Canada’s green wireless carrier. They offer a few devices that are made of recycled products and have several programs that give back to the environment (planting trees, recycling old cellphones etc). Now Fido has extended their relationship with Evergreen and has come up with the “Share Your Care” campaign. In total there are 20 green Canadian projects and each of them will receive a base of $2,500 (totals $50,000), but it gets better as another 50k will be distributed to 3 of the top projects that receive the most votes. Some of the 20 projects include “Promote wildlife education”, “Million Tree Challenge” and “Educate on water resources”.

Ever Wondered How Badly You’re Getting Screwed By Your Carrier Over SMS, Because You Are
Texting has to be the biggest form of message sharing that we have today and the wireless carriers are laughing all the way to the bank with every one that is sent. Let’s suppose you text your friend the following: “Yo Joe, what’s up bud?”. Well it turns out that a short message like that ends up costing the carrier 1/1,000 of a cent. So if you send out anywhere around a 1,000 messages it might end up costing the carrier one single penny and for those of you that are message crazy, well, you might cost the carrier two cents.

App Development Services Market To Reach $100 Billion By 2015
The market for mobile application development services, which includes things like app creation, management, distribution and extension services, will grow to $100 billion by 2015, according to a new report from research2guidance. Currently, the number of applications developed by third parties is at 66%, but the analyst firm believes this will increase over the next few years as more companies want to publish for mobile, but don’t have in-house resources to do so.
