Following its move to throttle users after the unexpected growth of its Broadband2Go service last year, Virgin Mobile has further reduced the amount of data that can be transferred at full speed before throttling is implemented on a customer’s account, from the previous 5GB limit to 2.5GB. While the operator previously implemented a 5GB soft cap on the 15th, the latest information suggests that Virgin Mobile has decided to maintain the unlimited data plan but will implement throttling on a more frequent basis with a lower transfer limit.
Virgin Mobile is also allowing customers that want to lift the throttling on the account to purchase an additional month of service at $50, but this makes the offering less attractive for home users and directly contradicts Virgin Mobile’s own marketing which touts it as a viable home broadband solution since home users are more likely to hit the new cap as well as those frequent travellers using Broadband2Go as an alternative to hotel Wi-Fi.
