Samsung Galaxy S 4G, The Vibrant’s Successor Gets New Name, Details

The Samsung Vibrant 4G first revealed a couple weeks ago now has a new name and plenty of details to go along with it.  Called the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, the handset isn't much different from the Vibrant, although the changes should be notable enough to make those who bought the original recently just a little upset.

On the hardware end, there are, basically, two notable differences: a front-facing VGA camera for video chat and an ST-Ericsson radio for receiving HSPA+ signals.    The rest of the ensemble appears to be exactly the same, including their appearance.

Details of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G include a  4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, a 5.0 megapixel camera module (with 720p video recording), aGPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD card expansion (16GB preloaded) and a 1,650mAh lithium ion battery.  Android 2.2 Froyo will come pre-installed, along with the usual suite of Google Mobile apps, T-Mobile TV (for taking advantage of that 21Mbps bandwidth) and a whole roster of others (DoubleTwist with AirSync, Slacker Radio, Amazon Kindle for Android and Qik, among others).

Like the Vibrant (again), a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor provides the muscle.  It even copies the gimmick of the Vibrant, shipping with a full-length movie installed for enjoyment on the crystal clear Super AMOLED screen.  Instead of Avatar, though, they threw in Inception for your viewing pleasure.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G will be available sometime this month, likely after it shows up at the Mobile World Congress.   No pricing was confirmed, but you can probably expect it at around $149.99 on a two-year contract.
