Samsung Profits Drop, Saved Only By Smartphones And Tablets

Samsung reported a 30 percent drop to $2.6 billion in their Q1 2011 profits when compared to the same quarter last year. The Korean electronics manufacturer blames the dip on falling chip prices and slowing display sales. What’s kept going strong, is there smartphone sales, including its Galaxy S series, which have jumped 18 percent from the previous year.
Samsung Galaxy II Samsung Profits Drop, Saved Only By Smartphones And Tablets

According to recent NPD report, Samsung takes the lead in the U.S. smartphone market with a 23 percent market share, followed by LG and then Apple. Samsung’s semiconductor division that supplies tablet components and other devices is also doing well with a 70 percent increase. However, despite the success in smartphones and tablet components, Samsung gives a cautious forecast:

We forecast that the challenging business conditions will persist in the second quarter, effected by lingering worries over the global economy and tight competition in consumer electronics and mobile businesses

Samsung is also in the midst of a legal battle with Apple. Despite being Apple’s major components supplier, Samsung has been slapped with a patent suit from Apple saying that their Galaxy series smartphones and tablets intentionally copy the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung has fought back with its own patent suit, and adding one more just recently.

With Samsung’s other divisions, such as its LCD panels, TVs, and PC components, failing to perform, it will be important that they protect their smartphone and tablet division with the onslaught of rivals while battling Apple over patents.

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Thursday, April 28th, 2011.

NPD: Apple passes RIM, Motorola to become third largest phone seller in U.S.
Android may be dominating the mobile OS wars, but as far as phone maker market share goes, Apple is still in the thick of things in the US. In fact, according to NPD, they’ve now overtaken both RIM and Motorola to become the third largest phone vendor in the US. The top spot is still held by Samsung (23%) followed by LG (18%). Apple now holds 14% market share. Globally, though, Apple’s still got a long way to go if they want to break into the top three.

Rogers to release the Nokia E5
There’s a new Nokia phone headed to town, and its courtesy of Rogers. For those not familiar with this particular phone, the Nokia E5 packs a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, WiFi, GPS, a 2.4-inch display, and a full QWERTY keypad. Unlike most Eseries phones, this one, unfortunately, doesn’t come with 3G connectivity. Pricing and launch date are both still yet to be known though.

Android 2.3.4 heading to Nexus S over the air, bringing video and voice chat to Gtalk
Video and voice chat (via Gtalk) will soon be available on Android, and by soon, we mean the next couple of weeks. It’s coming by way of Android 2.3.4, which will be first released to the Nexus S over-the-air with other Android 2.3 devices to follow suit thereafter. This is basically Google’s answer to FaceTime. With this feature, Android users can now place a Google Talk voice/ video call straight from their phone to their Gtalk buddies, regardless if the other person is also using an Android device while on the road, or at home on their PC. And in stark contrast to FaceTime, this works over 3G/4G as well apart from WiFi. Now that’s what I call true mobile video calling without limits.

Game Rentals by Redbox from June

If your city is anything like mine, old-fashioned movie rental stores may be very few. All of the major chains have gone out of businesses my area leaving only a handful of Redbox kiosks to serve those wanting to rent a flick. The bad part is that if I want to rent a game I don’t have any options in town.
RedBox Game Rentals by Redbox from June

That video game problem will change this summer. Redbox has been talking about game rentals for a long time now and the company has finally announced that it will start rentals of video games on June 17. The company says that the game rentals will come to about 21,000 kiosks around the country.
The games in the Redbox machines will be for the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. Each night of rental will set you back $2. That sounds cheap until you realize that you could get five days from some of the old chains for less than that amount. The upside is if you rent a game that really sucks; you can return it the next day only be out $2.

white iPhone 4 vs black iPhone 4

White iPhone 4 thickness creates issue for case makers, owners
Is the color the only difference between the iPhone 4 that rolled out last year and the white one that just got released this week? At first glance, it may appear to be yes, but it isn’t. It’s a tad bit thicker, 0.2mm thicker to be exact, than the black version. And though for many this might not be much of an issue, case makers, especially those who make snug-fit cases for the iPhone 4, are having a headache because of this. So for those of you who just bought a white iPhone 4, keep this in mind – not all black iPhone 4 cases will be compatible with the slightly thicker white iPhone 4.

State Farm’s Driver Feedback App Turns Your iPhone Into The Backseat Driver You Never Wanted

Believe it or not, peeling out at every stoplight and drifting around corners isn’t generally considered safe driving.

If you drive like a jerk and want an iPhone app to tell you just how jerk-like your driving is, Statefarm has your back. Today, they’re launching an app called Driver Feedback [iTunes Link] which, as you may have gathered from the name, gives you feedback on your driving. By polling the accelerometer while you cruise around, it gives you a score based on your acceleration, cornering, and braking — the better you drive, the higher you score. After each “trip” you can view your route on a map to see your worst offenses.

Countdown until some dumb kids battle each other for the lowest score on the route to school: 5..4…3…

(I’ve heard that they were going to change their jingle to “Like a good neighhbor, State Farm’s iPhone app is going to nag at you for driving too fast”, but it just didn’t have the same ring to it)

HTC Kingdom Another New Android Smartphone Pictured

Well it looks like old HTC has more than one new Android smartphone to tempt customer with, as we’ve just learnt about the HTC Rider being spotted and now another new HTC handset gets pictured called the HTC Kingdom.

The guys over at Pocket Now spotted the HTC Kingdom on the same site as the HTC Rider, 911 Sniper Blog, and say that the new Android handset looks similar to the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt, runs the Android OS and has a qHD display.

Like the HTC Rider, the HTC Kingdom doesn’t come with any word of what one can expect spec wise, but apparently the HTC Kingdom could be another smartphone headed for Europe, but other than that with a qHD display it should sport HTC Sense 3.0.

And that’s about all we can tell you about the HTC Kingdom for now, but we will of course bring you more information on the device as and when it becomes available.

Verizon Releases Statement on LTE Network Outage

Verizon has released an official statement regarding the now 10 hour (as of 6:28 CDT) LTE network outage throughout much of the country. The cause of the outage has been discovered and engineers are working to restore service as soon as possible. This outage affects LTE services, with the CDMA voice network functioning normally though LTE device activations have also been affected due to the outage and 1xRTT data service is available. There is currently no timeframe on the restoration of service. The full statement follows below:

We are aware of an issue with 4G LTE data connections and our network engineers are working to resolve this quickly. We have determined the cause of our issue and are working with our major vendors to restore connections.
* 4G LTE Smartphones will still be able to make calls.
* Customers are temporarily unable to activate any 4G LTE devices.
* Please note: Customers may experience a 1XRTT data connection during this time.
* After determining the cause of our 4G LTE network connection issue, we are continuing to work to restore connections.
* We expect to see the network restore on a market-by-market basis. Timing and additional details will be provided as they become available.

Nexus S 2.3.4 update now available to early adopters via manual install

The Nexus S is due to receive an over-the-air update to Android 2.3.4 over the coming weeks, but Google earned a +1 from eager fans and devs hoping to get the extra Google Talk functionality sooner. Instead of hopelessly checking for updates until the time is right, the Powers That Be are now offering the upgrade as a manual download to anyone who is already running 2.3.3 on the i9020T (the AWS-equipped model). We urge you to proceed with caution here and double-check that your phone is compatible, since those are the two requirements for the download to install properly. We've happily bumped one of our devices up to 2.3.4 this way without any sweat or tears, so we hope it will be a smooth experience for others as well. If you choose to be adventurous and update your Nexus S, click the source link below to download the necessary ZIP file.

webOS Developers Rejoice! The App Catalog Gets A Promo Code System

If you’re an app developer in the mobile world, promo codes (that is, one-time use codes redeemable for a free copy of your app) are amongst the most important tools you can have in your marketing handbag. Want an app review site to give your app a spin? They’ll probably want a promo code. Want to give away 50 copies of your app on Facebook to kickstart word-of-mouth? Unless you’re going to eat the cost of all 50 installs, you’ll need 50 promo codes.

Alas, most mobile platforms to date haven’t bothered to give developers any sort of promo code system. Android Market? Nope. WP7 Marketplace? Nuh uh. The webOS App Catalog? Nada — until today. webOS’ new promo code system has one glaring fault, though…

First, the details on how it works: with each major update to an application, developers can generate up to 1,000 promo codes that expire after 60 days (By comparison, Apple’s App Store promo code system generates up to 50 promo codes per build, which expire after 28 days.) Developers can give these codes out as they please, then use the campaign manager to track which codes have been used, revoke codes, and browse through their code history.

Now, on to the glaring issue. As our buds over at PreCentral point out, the button that the user presses to redeem a code is in a rather unfortunate location: the purchase confirmation screen.

Why is that bad? Because it presents the user with a moment of pause — at the very last second before purchase, no less. Let’s say a user has already decided to grab your app. They tap the buy button, and up slides the confirmation drawer. There’s an option to confirm the purchase… or there’s the option to use a promo code.

“A Promo Code? I can get promo codes for this? Why don’t I have a promo code?!”, they wonder.

So the user then turns to Google in search of a promo code. Maybe they’ll return to buy your app. Maybe they won’t. It’s like if the person working the register at the grocery store said “You know, you could get this for free if you had a coupon!” after every single item. You’d want a friggin’ coupon.

The solution? Just do what Apple does: put one “Redeem Promo Code” button in some inconspicuous place in the store, and have that single button serve as the redemption mechanism for all promo codes regardless of which app it’s for. Users who obtain codes will figure out how to use’m, while users without’em won’t be driven to hunt one down as opposed to actually buying the app.

Epix brings its thousands of movies to Google TV; apps for Android, Roku and Playbook on the way

While some video providers are moving away from Google TV, Roku and the Playbook, and Netflix still has yet to officially release its movie streaming app on any Android devices, the Epix channel is going all in. Following its "Big on Any Screen" slogan, it will roll out apps on a slew of devices over the second quarter beyond its current Flash player. The Google TV portal is already up and running as seen above and apps are on the way for "Android tablets and phones from HTC, LG and Motorola" -- we've pinged to see if this will be device exclusive but haven't received a response yet -- the BlackBerry Playbook, Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players and Roku streaming players. Not listed in the press release is anything iOS, but Epix confirmed it is working on an app that is waiting for Apple's approval. Not familiar with the channel? It has over 3,000 movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM plus original programs and live events that is available via your cable or satellite TV provider and launched with an HBO Go-style online component. Verizon FiOS is apparently on deck to help push the new apps, check out the rest of the details in the press release after the break.

T-Mobile G2x lacks quadband HSPA+, shatters dreams

Ever since we first saw it at CTIA, T-Mobile's been advertising its lovely G2x superphone as a quadband HSPA+ capable device. Based on the published specs in press releases and even on T-Mobile's own website, there wasn't any reason to believe that the G2x wasn't compatible with AT&T's 1900 / 850MHz 3G bands, in addition to supporting T-Mobile's 1700MHz "4G" (AWS) flavor and Europe / Asia's 2100MHz standard. This made perfect sense -- especially in light of AT&T's plans to acquire T-Mobile -- until people started purchasing and unlocking the handset. Reports quickly came trickling in that the G2x was unable to connect to AT&T's 3G network, something we verified after unlocking our review unit. That's when we decided that perhaps this was a restriction in the baseband software rather than a hardware limitation, so we reached out to T-Mobile for comment, and received the following statement:

The T-Mobile G2x fact sheet, attached [PDF link], contains accurate information. The T-Mobile website is incorrect and we're working to correct it. The G2x supports 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G/GPRS only, and supports 3G/4G UMTS/HSPA+ bands I and IV. The G2x does not support AT&T's 3G bands. This banding is hardware based.

This is obviously unfortunate news, and is clearly a major faux pas on behalf of T-Mobile. It's particularly disturbing since we were so certain of the G2x's quadband 3G support when we discussed it in our last mobile podcast. Oh well, you live and learn, eh?

Verizon Delays Droid Charge Launch in Wake of LTE Network Outage

Samsung Droid ChargeFollowing the outage and subsequent restoration of LTE services this morning, Verizon has delayed the launch of the Samsung Droid Charge to an unspecified later date. The smartphone was originally slated for launch this morning, but was delayed at the last minute due to the LTE network outage, which affected activations of LTE devices. While the phone could have been activated for CDMA service only via provisioning menu settings, current activation procedures require the provisioning of LTE service first before provisioning for CDMA service can begin. Verizon has yet to confirm a new launch date for the Droid Charge.

White iPhone 4 Now Live on Apple Store

Yes folks the day has finally arrived when you can hit up Apple online and purchase the white iPhone 4 as Apple has now gone live with the pale version of the iconic iPhone making the handset available via their online store.

It’s taken quite a while for Apple to finally bring the white iPhone 4 delay saga to an end, something no doubt has caused many white iPhone 4 wannabees to choose a black version or even a different smartphone.

But it looks like the white iPhone 4 is here to stay this time and is available in both 16GB and 32GB on both AT&T and Verizon network for those that wish to acquire the much sought after iOS handset, which ships in three o five days.

Other than that, there’s not much else to add but I’m fairly sure the release of the iPhone 4 in white will make many of the iPhone faithful happy. So are you going to purchase the white iPhone 4 or has Apple left it too late?

Verizon's LTE network takes the night off, leaves a bunch of Thunderbolt users bewildered

Is your fancy new phone lacking that certain extra G that makes it special? Worry not, it's not just your device, Verizon's entire LTE network seems to be having problems as outages have been reported from across the US. We tested our own Thunderbolt in San Francisco this morning and it was indeed making do with only 3G connectivity. It's important to note that Verizon's 3G network seems to be ticking along quite alright, it's just 4G service that's down at the moment. Some folks have reported losing both 3G and 4G connectivity, but that's owing to a documented issue with 3G provisioning on the Thunderbolt -- we've noted the way to overcome that problem in a previous post. For now, just enjoy your regular-speed mobile internet until the super-fast stuff is fixed and back up.

Acer Iconia Smart hits the FCC, readies to smack AT&T with 1024 x 480 screen?

Acer promised a 4.8-inch, 1024 x 480 tabletphone would arrive in April 2011, and April's nearly through -- but don't cross off the Acer Iconia Smart yet, because that brushed aluminum frame has just materialized at our favorite government institution. Yes, the FCC laid eyes on radiation test reports for the Android 2.3 device, which reveal that the quad-band GSM handset is headed to both Canada and the US. Given that the North American version only has 850, 1900 and 2100MHz 3G frequencies, it sounds like a lock for AT&T. Inside, you'll find a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, 512MB each of ROM and RAM, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, a 2 megapixel front-facing cam, micro-HDMI output capable of 720p, a 1500mAh user-replaceable battery and all the usual 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS trimmings you'd expect. Now, Acer, how about a new release date?

Keepin' it real fake: Windows Phone 7 debuts in China

If smartphone platforms are legitimized by a KIRF manufacturer's tenacity to rip them off, then Windows Phone has truly arrived. Today we're looking at a larger than life "HTC"-branded knock-off of the Omnia 7, replete with an 800 x 480 4.8-inch (!) capacitive touchscreen and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Given the massive size of this phone, there's plenty of room for features, which include Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS connectivity, along with a five megapixel camera, dual-SIMs and two microSD slots (for up to 32GB storage). Whew. Impressive specs aside, the device comes saddled with Windows Mobile 6.5 -- which has been heavily modified to resemble WP7's tile interface. There's no word yet on pricing -- just ask someone selling phones on a blanket the next time you're in Shenzhen, okay?

Contest: Win Qualcomm’s 1.5 Ghz, 13 Megapixel Android Development Superphone (Worth $1,350!)

I get to give away lots of cool stuff on MobileCrunch… but this might be the coolest thing we’ve given away yet.

This morning, Qualcomm began selling an Android device called the Snapdragon MDP MSM8660. This thing is, in a sense, a glimpse of the future. Built on top of a dual-core, 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon CPU, the crazy fast Adreno 220 graphics chip, and sporting a 13 megapixel camera, the MDP is primarily meant for developers to get a head start on the tech that’ll be hitting handsets later this year.

As you might expect, this thing doesn’t come cheap. If you were to buy it direct from Qualcomm, it’d set you back $1,350. Win it from us, however, and it won’t cost you a dime.

What you win:

See that big ol’ protective suitcase? You win that. Inside of it is the Snapdragon MDP, plus a handful of other goodies that we’ll let the winner find for themselves.

As for what’s inside the Snapdragon MDP, check out the specs on this thing:

Dual-core 1.5 GHZ CPU

13 Megapixel rear camera (Capable of 1080p video recording at a full 30 FPS)

1 Megapixel front camera

3.61″ WVGA capacitive multi touch screen

HDMI video output (Capable of pushing stereoscopic 3D video)

1 GB RAM

16 GB internal storage, plus an included 8GB SDHC card

802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM

(Note: This chipset inside this phone is compatible with both CDMA and GSM networks, and CAN be configured for use as an actual phone. With that said, some carriers don’t allow non-certified devices on their network, so getting it up and running might require some… convincing. Gettin’ things working on any given carrier is the responsibility of the winner, though we’ll try to point you in the right direction.)

How To Win:

We’re doing things a bit differently than we usually might. In this contest, we’ve got three ways to enter. Two of the routes are worth one entry each, while the other will get you three entries.

The best part: you can enter all three ways if you so choose, scoring you a grand total of five entries into the contest. Like buying five tickets for a raffle, it gives you considerably better odds than the guy who only entered once.

Entry Method #1: Like Us On Facebook, Find The Passphrase:

We’ve got this fancy MobileCrunch fan page on Facebook. Hit the “Like” button, then dive into the photos section. In there will be a photo of the suitcase shown up above — tucked into the details of that photo will be a secret passphrase. E-mail that secret passphrase to greg+MDP1@crunchgear.com, and bam — you’re entered. The catch: if you didn’t “Like” the MobileCrunch page before you sent your email, your e-mailed entry won’t count (if you liked the page before the contest started, you’re good to go.) Get to liking! Worth one entry.

Entry Method #2: Leave a comment

This one’s just like what it sounds like. Drop a comment on this page describing why you want the Snapdragon MDP, and you’re entered to win. Comment as much as you want, but each commenter will only be counted once (No trying to cheat! We’ll have the anti-cheat bots lookin’ for fishy details, and anything suspicious will be disqualified in a heartbeat). Worth one entry.

Entry Method #3: The Egg Hunt

This one might take a few minutes, but it’s worth up to three entries! Here’s how it works:

It’s April, and there’s no better way to celebrate the fourth month of the year than a hunt for totally secular egg-shaped objects. We’ve hidden three “eggs” like the one below in MobileCrunch posts from the last 30 days (March 29th — April 27th).

Find the stories with the eggs (not including this one) and e-mail each story’s URL to greg+MDP2@crunchgear.com. Send all the URLs you find in one e-mail. Each egg you find is worth one entry, totaling three possible entries.

This contest is only open to folks 13 and older from the US (Sorry, foreign friends! Exporting this thing would be a mess). The winning entry will be picked at random at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011. Happy hunting!

Toshiba Mobile Display, TFT LCD panel, liquid crystal cell, 7 inch LTPS TFT LCD, Toshiba TFT LCD, Toshiba LCD panel, Toshiba liquid crystal cell

Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd. has developed a 7.0-inch low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) for vehicle-mounted and industrial uses that enables multi-touch input on the display screen without the need for additional installation of a touch panel as a demonstration of its new touch panel technology.

The technology enables an integrated touch panel function by forming the display pixel electrodes and TFT within the LCD panel using LTPS TFT technology and creating a detecting circuit for electrostatic capacitance changes between the electrodes and the peripheral object. Compared to conventional LCDs with an external touch panel, the thickness is reduced by 57 percent to approximately 1 millimeter, the weight is reduced by 48 percent to 225 grams and the surface reflection ratio is reduced by 10 percent. Its smaller size enables the design of more compact products for mobile applications, reduces the impact on the environment by saving resources and power, provides crisp and clear images with minimal reflection of natural light even in a bright environment, and features intuitive multi-touch input.

Recently, an increasing number of smartphones, cellular phones, in-vehicle car navigation systems, tablet-type PCs and other equipment for mobile applications have been designed around a capacitive-type touch panel1 integrated LCD, thereby facilitating the rapid spread of products that feature a low-profile and reduced-weight design, and intuitive, easy and simple touch input. TMD has developed this technology in response to the increasing demand for in-cell touch panel2 LCDs with the touch panel function integrated in the LCD panel for further reduction of thickness, weight and environmental impact.

The capacitive-type touch panel is designed to form transparent electrodes on the touch panel and detect changes in electrostatic capacitance between the electrodes and the user’s fingers with high accuracy, thereby enabling the screen panel to respond easily to light finger touches. To integrate this feature in the LCD panel it is essential to suppress possible interference with various signals in the LCD panel. To address the problem, TMD has developed a proprietary sensor circuit, taking advantage of LTPS TFT technology. Specifically, an amplifier circuit is formed in the pixels to amplify the signals, which are then detected by the sensor for output, providing a configuration to precisely transmit sensor signals to the outside of LCD panel. This helps achieve consistent and fast-responding touch panel operation.

This technology will be exhibited in the Toshiba booth #1119 at SID 2011 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition to be held from May 17 to May 19, 2011 in Los Angeles, Calif., USA.

iPhone 5 The Way It Should Not Look

…and still the rumours and speculations continue surrounding the release of the iPhone 5 and what apple’s 5th generation smartphone will look like.

My colleague James did an article on April 24th, surrounding a mockup of what the newest addition to the iPhone family could look like, which appears to be very similar to an iPod with a “teardrop” profile” – see article here.

With the design of the next generation iPhone a great mystery and designs like the “teardrop”, as provided by thisismynext.com or the “Carbon concept” H.D.I. design being put out there to cause even more confusion, excitement and to get our tongues wagging.

It also seems that the shipping date of the iPhone 5 believed to be starting in September, as also indicated by mobilemag in their article, is causing even more hype and anticipation surrounding this latest Apple iPhone – possibly just what Apple is hoping for, as it keeps the phone at the forefront of people’s minds.

The rumours and speculations seem to be more of a wish list for those spreading them and give us an insight into what people are perhaps hoping to see on the new phone. Please let us know what you think of the latest mockup design and also what features you would like to see on the next generation iPhone.

Shocker! Instant messaging gains popularity as TXTing declines, BBM to blame

Apparently, those young'uns just love their BBM. According to a report by the research group Mobile Youth, young folk (read: those of you between 15 and 24) are increasingly abandoning SMS in favor of instant messaging apps, with texting expected to drop off 20 percent over the next two years. The main culprit? BlackBerry Messenger, which now boasts over 39 million users, many of them living outside the US. In fact, it's in the UK, Indonesia, South Africa, and Brazil -- all popular markets for BBM -- that Mobile Youth expects texting to dwindle the most. And if BBM is to blame, well, that drop-off could be just the beginning.

Is This The iPhone 4S?

The iPhone rumor mill has been all off-kilter for the past few weeks, primarily stemming from the idea that there may very well be no new iPhone at WWDC this year.

And yet, the rumor-mill continues to churn. According to whispers over the past few weeks, Apple’s busy toiling over a handset that looks very much like an iPhone 4, but with a few lil’ tweaks to its guts — namely, it’s purportedly packing Apple’s A5 CPU, and a slightly bigger screen.

If we were to follow that rumor even further, a handful of big-named developers supposedly have prototypes of these slightly-revised iPhone 4s floating around their offices (which, believe it or not, happens from time to time. From what I’ve been told, Apple rolls in, clamps the thing to a desk, makes them sign a mountain of papers, and rolls out). Some have taken to calling this spiritual successor the “iPhone 4S”, though there’s no reason to believe that’s Apple’s official name for it just yet.

MICGadget obtained the shot above — which, if real, certainly seems to be showing an iPhone with a reduced bezel and a bigger display.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen supposed pictures of such a handset — but this time, they’re not quite as easy to debunk.

What do you think: is this the real deal?

Apple Finally Shipping White iPhone To US Stores

Like this hamster, I am sure you are currently running in circles screaming “Excelsior” at your houseplants and pets, as it was written it has come to pass: Apple is finally shipping the white iPhone 4 and all signs point to availability this week.

The white iPhone, to be clear, is the same as the black iPhone 4 but it is white.

Apple Insider writes that the phones are in stores now and they are expected to be available on Wednesday. They will be sold in both Verizon/CDMA and AT&T/GSM flavors.

The question now is whether anyone will buy a potentially obsolete iPhone in the middle of the refresh cycle?

US Army Chooses Android Over iOS for First Smartphone

Not everything revolves around Apple and the iOS platform it would seem as the word is when it comes to picking a mobile operating system for the US Army, the military has opted to ignore Apple and iOS in favour of Android.

According to an article over on Apple Insider by way of Wired, the US Army is testing a prototype device designed by Mitre, called the Joint Battle Command Platform, which runs the Android operating system.

Apparently the development kit, which is known as the “Mobile/Handheld Computing Environment” is to be released to developers sometime in July, and the Army is looking at numerous tasks for the handset including the likes of “critical messaging” for on the ground reporting and medical requests, mapping, and a “Force Tracker,” which keeps tabs on friendly units.

Although apparently security is still a major concern that has to be resolved, and although still a long way from being a final device, it does appear that the US Army has decided that the Android Platform is the way ahead as the “Mobile/Handheld Computing Environment” is expected to run on numerous devices.

iPhone 5 Design Similar to iPod Touch

Ah the Apple rumours continue to roll out about their next generation iPhone, this time round word has it that the iPhone 5 may not look like the iPhone 4 at all, but would rather take on a form resembling the iPod Touch.

According to an article over on Ubergizmo, Joshua Topolsky of This Is My Next says according to sources the iPhone 5 will be “a completely redesigned handset” an iOS handset that looks “more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4.”

So based on what the sources have said Topolsky say the iPhone 5 may come out to play sporting a 3.7-inch edge-to-edge display, something that has been rumoured for a while now, a chassis along the lines of a “teardrop,” and a multitouch gesture based home button.

The image is of course a mock up, but Topolsky says the iPhone 5 will be a thinner handset than the iPhone 4, (maybe Apple is hoping to gain back that world’s thinnest smartphone title) with the screen being boned glass.

However apparently the increased screen size would mean a drop in pixels per inch to 326 x 312 but this would still qualify as Retina Display.

Of course all this is just pure speculation as I’m fairly sure Apple has managed to keep a tight lid on anything to do with the iPhone 5, and as we all know Apple is quite good at diverting people from the truth when it comes to Apple gear, this should be treated as such until such times as firm evidence is found.

Today’s Mobile News in Brief (April 22, 2011)

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Friday, April 22nd, 2011.

Why iOS is tracking you and how to stop it
In line with the recent expose highlighting the iPhone’s secret tracking habits, it’s actually no secret. It’s mentioned in the Terms and Conditions, but let’s be realistic, who reads that lengthy document, right? As to why Apple is doing this, it’s to built their own database for statistic purposes. Data sent to Apple is anonymous and encrypted. On the device itself, however, it’s unencrypted. Fret not paranoid iPhone users, there is a way to disable this. The bad news is you’ll have to jailbreak your device to get the app that does this. So, unless you’re willing to go the jailbreak route, we suggest you just be extra careful with your iPhone so that the info doesn’t land into the wrong hands.

Rugged, Android-powered Casio G’zOne Commando coming to Verizon on April 28th?
The Motorola Defy won’t be the lone rugged Android phone in the market for long. Verizon is set to roll out one by the end of the month courtesy of the Casio G’zONe Commando C771. This baby packs a 5-megapixel camera with flash, Bluetooth, and as expected, is built to military specifications for dust, water, and shock resistance. There’s no mention of its OS, but it did say it comes with Mobile Hotspot capabilities so we’re assuming it’s Gingerbread that’s loaded on this baby.
